At Whitby Smile Centre, we understand that a patient can have a gap in their mouth for many reasons. If left untreated, it is possible for a gap in a patient’s gumline to result in the teeth shifting and misaligning. Another risk is cause additional strain on the existing teeth. The remaining teeth will have an increased workload to compensate for the missing tooth. Additionally, if the misalignment causes the teeth to become uneven, then a section of a tooth may experience a significantly greater chewing load than others. A common solution to a missing tooth or teeth is a bridge.
This will typically take at least two appointments at Whitby Smile Centre to complete. The first appointment often entails the adjacent teeth to be prepared to accommodate the dental bridge. This usually requires a 1-2 mm peripheral reduction. In this initial appointment, your dentist in Whitby will also take an impression of your teeth to get the specifications for the upcoming device. Once your dental bridge has been completed, you will come in for the second appointment at Whitby Smile Centre. During this appointment, we will clear the area receiving the dental bridge especially if it is being supported by the tooth’s natural structure. The reason for this is that we want to reduce the risk of bacteria being trapped underneath the device. Once the area has been properly prepared, we will cement it into place.
